The Habsburg dynasty began with a legend—Radbot, a young Swabian noble, lost his hawk and discovered a perfect site for a castle. This fortress, Habsburg, would later lend its name to one of history’s most powerful families. From their humble beginnings in Swabia, the Habsburgs expanded their influence through strategic marriages and land acquisitions. Their rise culminated in the election of Rudolf I, who clashed with Ottokar of Bohemia at the Battle of Marchfeld (1278), securing Austria for his family. However, their ambitions led to fierce conflicts, including the Battle of Morgarten (1315) against the Swiss Confederacy and the Battle of Mühldorf (1322) against Bavaria. Despite setbacks, the Habsburgs remained a key force in the Holy Roman Empire. The Golden Bull of 1356 cemented their role in Imperial politics, setting the stage for their later dominance.
