Medusa was one of the three Gorgons, sisters with the power to turn anyone who looked at them into stone. Unlike her immortal sisters, Medusa was mortal and was known for her striking beauty.

Medusa’s story begins when she was a beautiful maiden, serving as a priestess in Athena's temple. According to one version of the myth, Poseidon, the god of the sea, became enamored with Medusa and pursued her. In some versions, he either seduced or assaulted her inside Athena’s temple. Angered by this desecration of her sacred space, Athena punished Medusa by transforming her into a hideous creature with snakes for hair and a gaze that could petrify anyone who looked at her.

Medusa’s fate was sealed when the hero Perseus, on a quest to bring back her head, used a mirrored shield given by Athena to avoid her deadly gaze. He beheaded Medusa while she slept, and from her blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chrysaor, a giant wielding a golden sword.

Though a tragic figure, Medusa's image became a symbol of protection, often used as an apotropaic device to ward off evil in ancient times.
