Today, we step back in time — WAY back — to the 1700s, to experience an authentic colonial meal just like America’s early settlers would have enjoyed. 🏛️
Welcome to King’s Arms Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia — a restaurant that recreates an 18th-century dining experience so faithfully, you’ll feel like you’re dining alongside George Washington himself!
In this video, we (two British expats now living in the USA!) take you inside one of America’s most historic taverns to try real colonial-era dishes based on recipes from the 1700s. From peanut soup to onion pye, snow eggs, and even a chocolate tart inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s chef, we tasted our way through history — and some flavors really surprised us.

Originally opened in 1772, the King’s Arms Tavern quickly became one of the most popular gathering spots in Williamsburg for Virginia’s gentry. Today, it remains a vital piece of Colonial Williamsburg’s living history, recreating the food, service, and atmosphere of the 18th century. Everything from the candlelight to the recipes is carefully researched to give visitors an authentic taste of early American life.
During our meal, we learned how even the language and traditions from the 1700s still influence modern life — including common sayings like “make ends meet”! It’s incredible to think how much has changed — and how much has stayed the same.

We wanted to go beyond just another food review. This experience is a deep dive into American colonial history through food. Dining by candlelight, being served by staff in period dress, and eating dishes recreated from centuries-old cookbooks made this one of the most memorable meals we’ve ever filmed.

Williamsburg, Virginia is known for its incredible history and diverse food culture, and we were blown away by the flavors, history, and hospitality we experienced. But what did we think of the best bbq and soul food? And which dish was our favorite?
