TMC Leader Abhishek Banerjee Warns EC Against SIR, Threatens Gherao If Voter Names Removed

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has strongly opposed the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. He accused the BJP and the EC of using the SIR as a political tool to exclude genuine voters ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Banerjee warned that if even one legitimate voter’s name is removed, massive protests would be organized, including a gherao of the EC office.

Banerjee called the SIR a secretive attempt to manipulate the electorate and questioned why West Bengal alone is targeted despite other border states facing similar issues. He held Union Home Minister Amit Shah and EC Chief Gyanesh Kumar responsible for the anxiety and unrest caused by the SIR process in Bengal. The TMC vowed to fight any deletion of genuine voters and urged supporters to stay calm while preparing for a strong democratic response.
