The Problem With Buildings That Just Fit In

Buildings and their surroundings have a complicated relationship. Especially in a residential context, the pressure for a building to fit in can be enormous. The collective desire for maintaining property values can often usurp an individual’s desire for their home to reflect their specific thoughts or dreams. This video calls for a more thoughtful approach to our knee jerk reactions to a building that is different. Concepts like contextualism and critical regionalism help to explain why houses like the Gallery House by John Ronan does fit in, despite it not appearing so at the outset. Also, examples like the Robie House, which certainly does not fit in, comes to be loved for the very reasons that set it apart.

He also serves as an Associate Dean in the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts and is the co-founder of the practice Design With Company. His work has earned awards such as the Architecture Record Design Vanguard Award or the Young Architect’s Forum Award and has been featured in exhibitions such as the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Design Miami, as well as at the V&A Museum and Tate Modern in London. His writings can be found in the co-authored book Misguided Tactics for Propriety Calibration, published with the Graham Foundation, as well as essays in MONU magazine, the AIA Journal Manifest, Log, bracket, and the guest-edited issue of MAS Context on the topic of character architecture.
