EDM just continues to evolve constantly. Today we are talking about riddim and dubstep. What's the difference? Is riddim a sub-genre or its own genre? And is Skrillex ruining dubstep? Today we're talking about riddim and dubstep. I did an Instagram poll a couple weeks ago asking what the difference is what people's favorite riddim or dubstep artists are and what they thought about Skrillex. I didn't get a ton of response. Most of the responses I got were, "I don't know. Is there a difference? What is the difference? Which one's a subgenre?"

So today will be really interesting. I fully expect some conversation about this because I'm just one person doing a little bit of research and giving my opinions. I've kind of like just laid out what every genre is and gone through a little bit of a timeline and I'm gonna kind of go through. It's all out of order, but I'm gonna do my best to kind of pull something together. EDM music continues to evolve constantly and it will continue to evolve. One of the biggest things that is kind of a misconception is that EDM is this new type of music, but really there's a long history and I want to dig in a little bit, but mostly focus, like I said, on riddim, dubstep drum and bass. I would like to start with in the early 1990s in London was a genre called UK Garage. UK Garage bleeds garage house R&B, Jungle and Dance Pop.

In 1990 in the UK we also have Drum and Bass. I know that there's a little bit of debate about this, but drum and bass; its own genre. Well known for fast break beats with heavy bass and the bass lines. This grew out of breakbeat hardcore. Hardstyle, not to be confused with hardcore music, was from the late 1990s in the Netherlands. Hardstyle is Dutch EDM mixed with Techno, Hardcore and Trance. It's hard sounding kick drum plus offbeat bass equaling reverb bass.

We move right along to the late 1990s in Russia where there is Hard Bass. The sub genre of Russian inspiration from UK fast tempo, bouncy techno and hard house.

Dubstep originated in Southern London in the late 1990s. I think most people are very familiar with dubstep. Dubstep.. I feel like you either love or hate dubstep. It is known for its prominent sub bass frequencies. Skrillex kind of brought it to the United States and made it popular.Some people love that. Some people don't. And then I have a note on here that Hardcore is 150 beats per minute.

We'll be talking about the beats per minute for all of these different genres and subgenres. So BPM is beats per minute. Also, fun fact, a SiriusXM channel BPM.

I love riddim, but I didn't know that riddim is actually the Jamaican patios, which means
kind of jargon or slang, for a pronunciation of the English term "rhythm." So riddim equals rhythm. Makes sense, right? I'm just going to go ahead and take a minute to talk about
the different artists and some sampled songs.
