It wasn’t the first time she’d canceled plans. In fact, it was the third time in a row. The first time, she’d said she had a work meeting that ran late. The second time, she claimed her friend was going through a “crisis.” But this one? She simply forgot.
We’d been together for a year and a half. Back when we started dating, she was attentive, excited, full of energy. She’d plan weekend trips, send me random “thinking of you” messages, even show up at my office with lunch just to surprise me. But lately, it felt like I’d become an option—a background tab in her busy life that she only opened when nothing else was happening.
I texted her back, “Not mad, just reminded.”
That was all. No lecture, no guilt trip. Just a small truth wrapped in calm words. She responded with an eye-roll emoji and, “Don’t be dramatic, babe. I’ll make it up to you.”
But she didn’t.
That night, I ate dinner alone at the restaurant we’d booked—a small Italian place we used to love. The waiter recognized me. “She running late again?” he asked gently.
I forced a smile. “Something like that.”
I drove home afterward and sat in the quiet of my apartment. I started scrolling through old photos of us, noticing how often I was the one holding the camera, planning the trip, buying the tickets, initiating everything. Every memory felt like a performance of effort that had stopped being reciprocated.
