Jay, writing from Dallas, Texas, shares a traumatic experience from a hunting trip in November 1998 near Nacogdoches, East Texas, when he was 15. Despite a bad feeling about the area, he joined his father for a three-day hunt on remote public land. On the last day, while alone in his tree stand at dusk, he heard a loud, close tree knock that immediately froze him in fear. Shortly after, a terrifying scream echoed through the woods, seemingly directed at him. The sound was so intense it caused him to collapse in fear.

As it grew dark and eerily silent, Jay heard heavy footsteps behind him, then saw a creature peering through the bushes just 20 yards away. It had gray, wrinkled skin, large black eyes, thin black lips, and reddish-brown greasy hair. Its round head was the size of a basketball. Though he had a loaded rifle, Jay was too paralyzed with fear to react. The creature eventually pulled back and disappeared, but Jay believed there was more than one.

When his father returned in the dune buggy, the creature stormed off, shaking the ground and screaming. Jay, in complete shock, jumped in the vehicle and blacked out. He vomited, locked himself in the truck at camp, and never explained what happened—fearing ridicule from his stern, military father. Years later, just before his father passed away, he finally told him it was “Bigfoot,” and they laughed about it.

The experience left Jay with long-lasting trauma. He’s never returned to deep woods since and only recently began exploring the subject of Sasquatch as a form of healing. Now married with children, he finally felt ready to share his story.
