I just love this idea, it’s so smart, and I really don’t know why more eateries across Vietnam don’t do it? Perhaps it will catch on and become a thing if enough people like and share it. It’s an easy way for foreigners and locals alike to give back to the older community who still work the streets of the Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Old is making way for new in the city, but so many of that generation have been left behind, and without a social safety net.

This little shop has been here for a long time and is just a couple of blocks west of the north end of Hoan Kiem Lake. One of them speaks English, so you don’t need to worry about having an issue ordering, or making a Pho donation.

When you visit Vietnam, do your best to buy from, and support the many people that you see working the streets. They work incredibly hard collecting recyclables, shining shoes, and selling all kinds of things, including food. A couple of dollars still goes a long way in Vietnam.
