commentary: following the recnt series of terrorist attacks against west german politicians, the site of the conference was placed under a heavy security blanket. even the delegates attending the meeting had to undergo rigid security searches before being allowed to enter the conference hall.

the leader of the christain social union party, franz straus, told the delegates at the meeting that he deplored the need for such security. the party leader said it was a sad day for west german democracy when a peaceful political meeting had to be guarded from those whom he termed, "terrorists who do not agree with democratic principles." he said the government must make a stand against such terrorists and return germany to a safe, democratic nation.

the conference meeting also discussed the present relationships between the governments of west and east germany and the present state of detente. the west germany economy was also examined with particular emphasis being given to inflation and unemployment.
