Join us for this lecture, where Professor Zach Murphy will present on Adrenergic Receptors. We begin by classifying adrenergic receptors into their primary types—alpha (α1, α2) and beta (β1, β2, β3)—and explaining where they are located throughout the body. We discuss the general signaling mechanisms of each receptor subtype, including their coupling to specific G proteins (Gq, Gi, and Gs) and the downstream effects on intracellular second messengers such as cAMP and IP3/DAG.

We then examine the physiological roles of each receptor, highlighting their effects in different organ systems. For example, α1-mediated smooth muscle contraction in blood vessels, α2-mediated inhibition of norepinephrine release via presynaptic autoreceptors, β1-mediated increases in heart rate and contractility, β2-mediated smooth muscle relaxation in bronchioles and vasodilation in skeletal muscle vasculature, and β3-mediated lipolysis in adipose tissue. We also explore the integration of these receptors in the sympathetic fight-or-flight response, emphasizing how receptor subtype distribution allows for targeted and nuanced physiological effects.

Finally, we connect this knowledge to clinical relevance by discussing how adrenergic receptor pharmacology is used in medicine. This includes examples of agonists and antagonists, their therapeutic applications (such as in hypertension, asthma, and heart failure), and potential adverse effects tied to receptor selectivity. By understanding both the molecular mechanisms and systemic outcomes of adrenergic receptor activation, we can better appreciate how these receptors serve as key control points in autonomic physiology.
