Kephart insisted every camper should “carry fire in his pocket.” His kit included:

A waterproof match safe filled with paraffined wooden matches.

A small tinder tin with birch bark, resin, and charred cloth.

A flint & steel set as a backup ignition method.

A candle stub, useful for starting fires in wet conditions.

We’ll walk through each item, explain its purpose, and demonstrate how Kephart’s approach to firecraft still works today.
