June 17, 2024, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation sent Susan Constant to Mystic Seaport Museum’s shipyard for a two-year restoration project. Now in the summer of 2025 we are halfway through the project and Susan Constant is on schedule to return to Jamestown Settlement in the summer of 2026.

In the meantime, with Susan Constant’s return still a year away, Plimoth Patuxet Museums has graciously loaned to Jamestown Settlement its shallop. @PlimothPatuxetMuseums

Often overlooked, the shallop played an important role in Virginia’s early history. It was brought across the Atlantic disassembled, then offloaded and assembled once the settlers arrived at the Virginia capes. With Discovery the shallop would remain in Virginia and would be used by John Smith as he mapped the Chesapeake Bay in 1608. In today’s video we join Keith as he gives us a brief introduction to the shallop on loan to us for the next two years. Come on out to Jamestown Settlement and check it out.
