This simple, lightweight and inexpensive design sleeps two comfortably, and the bed can be adjusted for more floor space when traveling solo. Building and living in a conversion van before the truck gave me invaluable insights for how to best utilize limited space, and I applied those insights to this truck camper build.

The simple, practical layout features lockable storage, a fold-out table, plenty of head room and floor space, overhead storage for surfboards, an auxillary battery, plus built-in dimmer lights and a fan. It's well ventilated, well insulated, and rugged enough to camp in snow. Altogether, this build cost me less than $1000, and took about a week to build with a few friends in an average wood shop. I started this DIY project with limited building knowledge and a tight budget, and with this no-frills design I was able to build a complete wooden truck camper with all the luxuries of a great camper. Here, we'll tour the inside of my lightweight, DIY bed-top truck camper and I'll share the ideas and insights that make it an outstanding, liveable space.
