Dr. Barbara Biber discusses the kind of deficits disadvantaged children bring to the classroom and approaches teachers must take to enable the children to overcome them. The children often lack the language skills, thought processes, and experiences one expects of children their age; they have often been reared in a psychologically barren home where they were not recognized as persons; some have existed in an atmosphere of uncertainty about the basic necessities of life, a world of unpredictable threats, with no realization that there is anyone who cares. Dr. Biber outlines the psychology and techniques which have been successfully used by teachers in drawing these children out, helping them into more meaningful relationships with people while extending and stimulating their understanding of the world around them.
