Since the earliest days of civilization, horses have lived alongside mankind. As a result, horses have been featured in myths and legends of various cultures throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Honored for their physical prowess, adaptability, and loyalty, horses have been portrayed as the companions of gods and heroes such as the Celtic Epona and the Arabian ebony horse, occasionally the mounts of villains and enemies such as the Headless Horseman and the Wild Hunt, and popular templates for mythical creatures, such as Pegasus and the Longma!
