In this hematology and physiology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy provides a detailed and high-yield overview of Erythropoiesis, the multistep process by which red blood cells (RBCs) are produced from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow.

We begin by exploring the site of erythropoiesis throughout development—from the yolk sac and liver during fetal life to the red bone marrow in adults. The lecture then walks through the stages of red blood cell maturation, starting with hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and progressing through myeloid progenitors, proerythroblasts, basophilic and polychromatic erythroblasts, and finally to the reticulocyte and mature erythrocyte.

You’ll learn how erythropoietin (EPO), primarily produced by the kidneys in response to hypoxia, plays a central role in stimulating RBC production and promoting survival and proliferation of early erythroid precursors.

This first part lays the groundwork for understanding the cellular development and regulation of red blood cell production and connects these concepts to normal physiology and clinical conditions like anemia and polycythemia.
