John Dartnell: Veteran of the Zulu War, Indian Mutiny, and Boer War – The Forgotten Soldier of Empire

He fought in the blood-soaked streets of India during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. He faced the warriors of the Zulu kingdom during the ferocious Zulu War of 1879—including the fateful day of the Battle of Isandlwana. And, remarkably, he lived to serve again during the Boer War at the twilight of the 19th century.

Yet few today remember the name of Lieutenant Colonel John George Dartnell—a man once nicknamed “Hell Fire Jack” for his fiery courage and relentless energy.

This video uncovers the extraordinary, overlooked story of one of the British Empire’s most enduring military men. Dartnell began his career as a young officer in the British Army during the brutal suppression of the Indian Mutiny. Years later, he found himself in southern Africa as the commander of the Natal Mounted Police, a colonial force that would play a key role in the early phases of the Anglo-Zulu War.

On 22 January 1879, Dartnell led a patrol that would—unintentionally—contribute to Lord Chelmsford’s fateful decision to split his forces, leaving the British camp at Isandlwana fatally exposed. While Dartnell survived, over 1,300 of his comrades were massacred by Zulu warriors.

Later, Dartnell took part in the campaign to restore British control in Zululand, and eventually returned to active service during the Second Boer War, proving himself yet again as a man of exceptional grit and loyalty.

This is the true story of a British soldier who defied death across three major imperial wars. A man who served Queen and country from the barracks of India to the hills of Zululand and the veldt of South Africa.
