Local first responders are remembering Reems Creek Fire Department Chief Chris Dorsey.

They held a funeral procession for Chief Dorsey, from Winston-Salem to Groce Funeral Home in Asheville.

Before becoming the Reems Creek Fire Chief, Chris Dorsey served with Buncombe County Emergency Services, Woodfin Fire Department, Weaverville Fire Department and the NC Urban Search and Rescue Task Force.

"He had helped countless paramedics, countless firefighters, and throughout the county and beyond," said Woodfin Fire Department Fire Chief Jeff Angel.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol led the funeral procession and once it reached Buncombe County, all Interstate 40 and Interstate 240 overpasses had emergency responders present to honor their colleague.

The last overpass along the route was the Montford overpass, where they draped a flag over the railing.

New 13 spoke with someone at the procession who had worked with Chief Dorsey, who said in part that Dorsey was an amazing mentor with a great sense of humor who, during the darkest of times, brought people out of that darkness.

He says Dorsey’s passing is a very hard hit for first responders in the community and for Buncombe County as a whole.

Angel said Dorsey’s father used to be the assistant fire chief at Woodfin Fire Department, so he’s known Dorsey since he was a kid.

"He always wanted to go with his dad, but if he didn't go with his dad, he would always, he'd ride his bicycle to a fire or somewhere like that," said Angel.

When Dorsey volunteered at the Woodfin Fire Department, Angel was his partner there for a while.

"We're going to miss him. He was a good friend. He was a good asset to all the communities that he served, but he was, he was mostly a good dad to his kids and a good brother to his brothers," said Angel.

Buncombe County said Dorsey died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 24, at 45 years old.
