Our adventure begins with a ride on the Skyglider gondola—a breathtaking trip up Mount Hoonah, offering sweeping views of the forested landscape and waters below. Afterward, we stroll through the lush rainforest to the historic Hoonah Cannery, now a hub for Alaskan-made gifts, souvenirs, and local crafts.

We cap off the day at the Crab House, a must-visit spot where we indulge in a couple of Crabby Bloody Marys—each one crowned with a full Alaskan crab leg. It’s the perfect way to toast to a day of authentic Alaskan experiences!

Join us as we explore the unforgettable port of Icy Strait Point, Alaska, one of the most scenic and serene cruise destinations along the Inside Passage. Arriving aboard the Norwegian Joy, part of the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, we dive into the charm of this remote Alaskan village near Hoonah.

Whether you're planning your own Alaskan cruise or simply want to relive the magic of Icy Strait Point, this video is your guide to the highlights of this beautiful, cruise-exclusive destination.

Icy Strait Point is located just outside the Tlingit village of Hoonah, the largest Native Tlingit settlement in Alaska. For centuries, the Tlingit people have lived off the land and sea in this region, thriving through fishing, hunting, and rich cultural traditions passed down through generations.

The area’s modern history began in the early 20th century when the Hoonah Packing Company built a salmon cannery here in 1912. The cannery operated for decades as a major economic driver in the community before closing in the 1950s. In the early 2000s, the site was carefully restored and reopened as Icy Strait Point, a privately owned cruise port developed by Huna Totem Corporation, a local Alaska Native-owned company.

Icy Strait Point is unique among Alaska cruise ports—it’s owned and operated by the local Tlingit people, and was designed to preserve and share their culture while supporting sustainable tourism. The site includes the restored cannery building, museums, shops, and access to excursions like wildlife tours, the Skyglider gondola, and ziplining.

Just a short walk or shuttle ride away, Hoonah remains a vibrant working village where many residents continue traditional fishing and subsistence practices. Visitors to Icy Strait Point get a rare glimpse into authentic Alaska Native life, set against the backdrop of stunning wilderness and cultural pride.
