In this episode, I invited Dr. Daniel Swain to talk about the state of the climate as we close out December and look ahead to 2025, examining our current warming trajectory and whether the world is heading toward a 3°C future. The conversation explores the legacy of the Paris Agreement ten years on, the challenges of staying below 1.5–2°C, and whether global action has meaningfully altered our path. We discuss the relationship between weather and climate change, why claims that a 3°C world would be “fine” are deeply flawed, and what such a world would actually look like—especially for the Global South, which has contributed least to emissions but faces the greatest impacts. The interview also touches on climate communication and outreach, including virtual weather and climate office hours, time management as a scientist, the role of technology and data centers, regional climate risks in the western United States, the geopolitics of climate change, and whether optimism or “data doom” best reflects the reality we face today.

Daniel Swain, Ph.D., is a climate scientist focused on the dynamics and impacts of extreme events—including droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires—on a warming planet. Daniel formerly held an appointment as a climate scientist (Associate Researcher) in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA and presently holds an appointment as a climate scientist (Associate Researcher) in the California Institute for Water Resources within University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR).
