One in three people will face a neurological disease in their lifetime. Cleveland Clinic is betting one billion dollars — and one million square feet — that it can change what happens next.

The Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute opens in early 2027, and with it comes a fundamentally different approach to treating the brain, spine, and nerves. This isn't simply a larger building. It's a complete reimagining of how neurological care is delivered — from the moment a patient walks through the door to the surgeons operating deep inside the brain.

A building built around the patient

Every detail of the institute's design traces back to one question: what does a neurological patient actually need? The answer shaped everything — from oversized rooms and sliding corridor doors for patients using wheelchairs, to straightforward wayfinding for patients who may not be experiencing their best neurological moment.

Each of the 60 private intensive care beds features floor-to-ceiling windows. Natural light, designers and physicians say, isn't just an amenity here. It's medicine. The brain relies on the rhythm of light and dark to regulate itself — and keeping critically ill patients connected to that natural cycle directly supports recovery.

The institute brings together 210 inpatient beds, 120 exam rooms, 18 operating rooms, an inpatient rehabilitation gym, 40 therapeutic spaces, and advanced imaging — all under one roof. Dr. Michael Steinmetz, a neurosurgeon at Cleveland Clinic, says that integration is the point.

"It allows us to fully integrate all aspects of neuroscience within one building — we can bring it all together," Steinmetz said.

Dr. Andre Machado, chief of the Neurological Institute, puts it even more simply: "Everything that has to do with the brain, the spine, and the nerves — here."
