What happens when a Chinese mini excavator goes head-to-head with a tractor backhoe in a real digging test?

I’ve got a Shanding SD12U mini excavator and a Massey Ferguson subcompact tractor with a backhoe, and I wanted to know which one actually digs better — not on paper, but in the dirt.

Everyone knows the mini excavator wins for setup time and swing area, so I skipped that and went straight to digging. I started with the backhoe, trench-style, down to about 24”. Then I ran the Shanding SD12U next to it and dug a parallel hole — over 30” deep — in less than half the time!

🕒 Times:

Massey Ferguson Backhoe — 9.5 minutes

Shanding SD12U Mini Excavator — 4.5 minutes

Even though the excavator bucket holds 26% less material, the mini excavator was far better.

I’m no professional operator (switching between backhoe levers and pilot controls definitely slowed me down), but that’s what makes this fun — it’s a real-world test from a real person. If you have a choice, go with the mini excavator. If not, the backhoe will get it done and it's better than a shovel.

🧩 Takeaway:
Faster, deeper, smoother — the mini excavator surprised me at how much faster it was.
