In this video, I’m walking you through my process for creating a dynamic intuitive abstract painting using a variety of layering techniques to build energy, movement, and depth. This painting came together without a plan—just following the process and letting each layer guide the next. I’m working with a vibrant palette that includes light blue permanent, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow medium, magenta, lime green, titanium white, and mars black, along with a few accents from violet and blue alcohol markers. The piece was painted on an 8x8 inch cradled wood panel. From the very beginning, I focus on creating movement and energy through gesture and repetition. As I layer, I play with contrast and edge quality to build visual interest and a sense of depth—not in a traditional, realistic way, but by letting some elements recede while others come forward.

Layering is one of the most powerful ways to bring a painting to life. It lets you build visual rhythm, create tension and release, and tell a story through shape, mark, and texture. Over time, practicing a range of layering techniques can also help you recognize your personal tendencies and develop a more confident, authentic painting style. Even with a limited palette or simple tools, there’s so much possibility in the layers.
