Archeologists Discover Perfectly-Preserved 2000-Year-Old Roman Shipwreck

Over a three-year expedition to the Black Sea, a team of archaeologists and scientists sought to uncover its secrets, from its geological past as a freshwater lake to its history as an ancient trade route. Initial dives retrieved a 1,000-year-old amphora from a Byzantine shipwreck, confirming the sea's remarkable preservation abilities. The team also determined that the sea flooded gradually over thousands of years, not in a catastrophic event. Despite initial concerns about wood-degrading bacteria, the expedition made a major breakthrough, discovering a 2,000-year-old Roman cargo ship with dozens of intact amphorae. Finally, the team made an unprecedented discovery: an incredibly well-preserved ancient Greek ship dating back 2,500 years and an intact Roman shipwreck from the first century AD, forever changing the understanding of ancient seafaring.
