As the Allies tightened their grip on the central Solomons, Japan began a difficult withdrawal from New Georgia. On the night of August 17, a group of US destroyers moved to intercept a Japanese reinforcement group off the northeastern coast of Vella Lavella. What followed was a sharp night skirmish, one that would affect the timing and safety of Japan’s wider evacuation effort.
