Top 13 Car Theft Scams
With a car being stolen in America every 32 seconds, thieves are getting more creative and dangerous. Here are the most common scams they use to target drivers, from low-tech tricks to high-tech surveillance.

Common Physical Scams
The Rock Noise Trick: A thief throws a small object at your car to make you pull over. While you're distracted, they attach a hidden GPS tracker to your vehicle to follow you home.

Staged Fender-Bender: A scammer intentionally bumps your car in traffic. When you get out to check the damage, an accomplice either steals your belongings or drives off with your car.

The Stranded Car Trap: Thieves fake a car breakdown on a quiet road. When a helpful driver stops, they are robbed or attacked.

The Gas Station Con: While you're pumping gas, one person distracts you with a question while another quickly steals your wallet or phone.

The Tire-Slice Setup: Crooks slash your car's tire in a parking lot and follow you until it goes flat. They then "offer to help" while an accomplice steals your car or valuables.

Fake Car Trouble Warning: Another driver signals that something is wrong with your car. When you pull over, they rob you.

Deception and Impersonation Scams
Fake Parking Attendants: A scammer in a reflective vest collects cash for parking at a busy event, but they don't actually work there.

Parking Lot Lurkers: Thieves watch people load their cars in parking lots. If you walk away from your locked vehicle, they break in and steal your bags.

Fake Cops: Criminals use fake lights and uniforms to impersonate police and pull you over, putting you in a vulnerable position for robbery.

Rental Car Bullseye: Thieves target rental cars, knowing that tourists and travelers are often distracted and unfamiliar with their surroundings.

High-Tech Surveillance Scams
Key Fob Relay Theft: Criminals use a special device to capture and "boost" the signal from your key fob (even from inside your home), tricking your car into unlocking and starting the engine.

Magnetized Phones and GPS Tags: Thieves attach hidden GPS trackers to the underside of your car to monitor your routine and find the best time to steal your vehicle or target your home.

AirTag and Covert Tracker Ambush: This is the most dangerous scam. Thieves hide a tiny tracker like an Apple AirTag in your car. They track your location remotely and wait until you're in a secluded area, like your own driveway, to steal the vehicle.
