Marseille is France's oldest and second largest city, it was founded 2600 years ago by Greek sailors and its Old Port has always been a hub for immigration and sea trade. A large portion of Marseille's residents are made up of people from France's ex-colonies such as Tunisia, Algeria and Sub-Saharan African countries like the Ivory Coast. This makes Marseille France's most multicultural city and the different cultural influences have resulted in a unique French identity, culture and cuisine. Marseille has traditionally suffered from a bad reputation in France and the rest of Europe due to its ties with the mafia, immigration and illicit drugs trade, but in 2013 it was designated European Capital of Culture and significant investment was pumped into the city to rejuvenate areas like the Vieux Port and create cultural offerings such as the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) to attract more visitors. It's interesting to see how cultural phenomena like the city's football team Olympique de Marseille and Marseille rap music has united its residents and given them a sense of collective identity. The Calanques National Park are Marseille's most beautiful natural area with rocky inlets and turquoise coves. It's a fascinating city to explore with its mix of history, culture and Mediterranean landscapes!
