STORY

Hidden deep in the Spanish countryside stands a palace built to conceal a royal secret. Behind its fortified walls, a young boy was raised under strict control — his days filled with lessons, drills, and prayers, his identity shrouded in silence.

Born on April 7, 1629, Don Juan José de Austria was the illegitimate son of King Philip IV of Spain and the actress María Calderón, known as La Calderona. To hide his existence, the King ordered a private residence to be built in 1623 under Don Pedro Velasco Bracamonte’s supervision — a man he trusted completely.

Designed by architect Juan Gómez de Mora, this Renaissance-style palace combined a home and chapel within enclosed walls, ensuring that no one could glimpse the life unfolding inside. Every detail, from the carved family crests to the chapel’s statue of Santiago the Pilgrim, reflected loyalty, secrecy, and control.

Here, young Juan grew up under constant supervision, molded to serve the Crown — and destined to become one of the most powerful figures of 17th-century Spain.
