This week I’m turning something truly special – a Macassar Ebony burl, one of the rarest and most expensive woods I’ve ever had the chance to work with. Still wrapped straight from the supplier when it arrived, this slab was a real leap of faith… and my hands were definitely shaking when it first went on the lathe!

Macassar Ebony is known for its dramatic contrast, tight grain, and stunning depth of colour, but burl pieces like this are almost never seen. In this video I’ll take you through the full process: preparing the blank, mounting it safely, dealing with voids and flaws, and bringing out the most from a once-in-a-lifetime piece of wood.

Was it worth the risk? You decide.
