The History of Jamestown Colony: The Start of English Colonization of the Americas

In this Jamestown episode students learn about the challenges of surviving at Jamestown and what led to the success of the Jamestown settlement. From early efforts under Queen Elizabeth I, including what happened at the "lost colony" of Roanoke and how the desperate efforts to rival Spain led investors to form the joint stock company, the Virginia Company, to settle the new world. With a focus on gold and returning money to the investors, it led the first settlers in Virginia to franticly search for treasure rather than do the work of establishing a lasting colony. The episode covers violence and trade with Chief Powhatan's confederacy, how John Smith saved Jamestown with his leadership, the starving time, and how John Rolfe's tobacco served as the long awaited cash crop that led the settlement to become an early boom town in English North America. Lastly, it covers how tobacco led to the need for laborers- both indentured servants and the first enslaved people from Africa in 1619 that came to Jamestown and that same year, the first mini-parliament opened, the House of Burgesses that led to the start of republican government in the English colonies.

Ultimately, students see how Jamestown impacted American history for years to come!
