The 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco and Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City are reviewed. In San Francisco, where the nomination was genuinely in doubt, the film focuses on the process of nomination. The platform committee; the candidates the candidates' headquarters; march of Civil Rights protesters; delegates' arrival at the Cow Palace; keynote address by Mark Hatfield; President Eisenhower speaks; platform disputes; Senator Dirksen nominates Senator Goldwater; token nominations; Milton Eisenhower nominates Governor Scranton; roll call vote; Scranton's pledge to support the ticket; William Miller accepts the Vice Presidential nomination; Senator Goldwater accepts the Presidential nomination. At the Democratic Convention, the nomination was settled, but there was disagreement over the platform plank on Civil Rights, the seating of the Mississippi delegation and some suspense concerning President Johnson's choice of a running mate. The Credentials Committee debate on the Freedom Democrats is shown (Martin Luther King appears before the committee.) Adlai Stevenson arrives with some visiting diplomats; Senator Pastore delivers the keynote address; settlement of the platform and seating disputes; nomination of President Johnson by Governor Connally; President Johnson announces his choice of Senator Humphrey; Senator Robert Kennedy appears at the Convention for a tribute to President Kennedy (audio of speech not in this film); President Johnson accepts the nomination; the delegates go home.
