Chamba Rumal, the art of embroidery originated in the 17th-18th century. Inspired by Pahadi paintings, facial expressions of the figures and their lively body movements had a sharp resemblance in the two. The intricacy of the craft owes to the do-rukha, or identical stitch on both sides made using double satin stitch and silk yarns. Due to its remarkable characteristics, it is a time consuming and tedious process, and hence cost of production is very high. Till date, it is used in Rumal only with ample scope in fashion market. In this attempt, emphasis was given on its distinct characteristic of reversible embroidery and product diversification. Traditional embroidery with ethnic designs and motifs in brilliant colors bear a distinct hallmark of Indian textile design. This embroidery has its own regional identity and has crossed borders to be marketed in different parts of the world.
