South Korea has unveiled the Hyunmoo‑5, its largest and most powerful conventional ballistic missile. The weapon is heavy and long. It weighs about 36 tonnes and measures roughly 16 metres. Seoul casts the Hyunmoo‑5 as deterrence — a “balance of terror” intended to counter North Korea. Critics warn the weapon could raise regional tensions amid North Korea’s own missile advances. The Hyunmoo‑5 therefore marks both a technological leap and a strategic gamble for stability on the Korean Peninsula.
