Over the past few months, controversy has erupted in the military creator community surrounding retired Delta Force operator John “Shrek” McPhee. Once widely respected for his distinguished service and compelling storytelling, McPhee’s credibility came under fire after two major YouTube channels, ValhallaVFT and The AntiHero Podcast, released exposé videos questioning key parts of his military record. McPhee, who rose to fame through interviews with major figures like Joe Rogan and Shawn Ryan, built a brand around his Delta Force background, combat experience, and leadership during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His stories—from hunting Zarqawi to fighting at Tora Bora—helped him cultivate a loyal following. However, allegations of stolen valor and personal misconduct have since clouded his reputation. The accusations originated from ValhallaVFT’s viral video, “The Dark Truth of John Shrek McPhee,” which claimed McPhee’s Special Forces tab was revoked, that he retired as an E-8, not an E-9, and that he lied about conducting a combat jump into Iraq. ValhallaVFT (Nate) based his claims on 200 pages of official documents obtained through FOIA requests. Although some charges—like the revocation of McPhee’s SF tab—appeared legitimate, others were more nuanced. Critics argued McPhee never truly represented himself as Special Forces, having openly said he disliked that assignment. His use of the SGM title, however, crossed ethical lines when he failed to correct others who introduced him that way. The video split the military community. Some supported Nate’s exposure of inconsistencies; others—like retired Green Beret Clay Martin and creator NickyMGTV—defended McPhee, arguing his accomplishments and service outweighed later disciplinary actions. They emphasized that even if demoted or stripped of tabs, McPhee still earned those positions during his career. Tensions escalated when Nate appeared to withhold further documents, which some saw as an attempt to threaten McPhee rather than inform the public. Nate later claimed to have more valor awards than McPhee—a claim that proved false and damaged his credibility. Eventually, Nate stepped back from the feud, while NickyMGTV pursued his own FOIA request, which curiously listed McPhee as “SGM,” deepening confusion over his official record. A week later, The AntiHero Podcast released its own exposé, calling McPhee the “Barney Fife of Baghdad.” Hosted by another former Delta operator, Brent, the episode accused McPhee of fabricating parts of his combat history—especially his claims about calling airstrikes, conducting solo missions, and performing heroic acts at Tora Bora. Yet when cross-referenced with Kill Bin Laden, a book by McPhee’s Delta commander Tom Greer (Dalton Fury), much of McPhee’s narrative aligned with documented events. While he clearly exaggerated details, core elements—like his presence at Tora Bora, participation in airstrikes, and certain missions—were more fact than fiction. The backlash, however, wasn’t purely about truthfulness. Many believe McPhee’s outspoken personality, controversial takes on the War on Terror, and association with figures like Tim Kennedy made him an inevitable target. His polarizing Megan Kelly interview, where he suggested U.S. forces let Bin Laden escape, and dismissive comments about Lone Survivor and Chris Kyle likely intensified resentment among peers.
McPhee’s case exposes deeper issues within the veteran and military influencer communities—ego, credibility, and accountability. While McPhee undeniably embellished some stories, the available evidence supports that his service was largely authentic. Ultimately, the saga of John McPhee vs. the Internet reflects the tension between truth and entertainment in the online veteran space.
