Fort Riggs airfield was still wrapped in darkness when the hangar lights began to hum awake. Cold wind drifted through the open doors, carrying the scent of jet fuel and rain-soaked asphalt. A dozen pilots gathered near the briefing table, coffee steaming in paper cups, voices low and confident.

Colonel Warren Blackwood stood at the front, his tone sharp but casual. “All right, people. Pentagon observers arrive in thirty. Keep it clean, keep it tight.” Then, with a smirk, he added, “Colonel Vanik, you’ll be on standby duty. No need to confuse the guests with too many aircraft in the sky.”

A few chuckles rippled through the group. One younger pilot leaned toward another and whispered, just loud enough to carry, “Let’s see if the diversity project can even start the rotors.”

Laughter followed, echoing through the cavernous hangar.

Astrid Vanik said nothing. She tightened the strap on her glove, her gaze steady on the Apache’s shadowed frame. The laughter faded, but the silence she left in its place was heavier than any storm.
