Glowing from Within – A Woodturning Transformation Like No Other

This project nearly didn’t happen. What started as a rough, partly rotten Black Locust burl looked ready for the firewood pile — but I decided to give it one last chance. What followed was a real battle on the lathe, as cracks, voids, and decay fought me every step of the way. Yet beneath the rough surface lay something extraordinary.

Black Locust is one of the most fascinating woods in the world — not only is it beautiful when turned and polished, but it’s also naturally fluorescent under UV light. When the piece was finally finished and I shone a light across its surface, it revealed a hidden glow that made every struggle worthwhile.
