In 2003, Yang Liwei, China’s first astronaut, heard a strange knocking sound during his first trip to space. He said it sounded like someone hitting an iron bucket with a wooden hammer.

Since sound doesn’t travel in space, he couldn’t figure out if the noise came from inside or outside the spaceship. Worried, he looked out the window but didn’t see anything unusual.

When he returned to Earth, he told experts about the noise but couldn’t recreate it. The mystery grew when other Chinese astronauts also reported hearing similar sounds during space missions in 2005 and 2008.
