This isn’t your average barn renovation tour! Builder Josh Salinger of Birdsmouth Design-Build in Portland, OR stopped by our Passive House retrofit project at a 200-year-old barn for Studio HPDC, which as far as anyone knows will be the oldest Passive House building in the country once certified. Very cool.

Pete Ferrero joined Josh to walk the job and discuss the all the build details including the “Salinger Roof”, a foam-free, super vapor-open, and pretty unusual assembly originally featured in Fine Homebuilding and recommended for this project by Kohta Ueno.

Pete and Josh talk building science, control layers, structure, framing, and everything in between. This is some seriously good builder banter and a great chance to see what it took for us to preserve this historic barn and turn it into a “living lab” where training, teaching and learning about high-performance building will happen for decades to come.
