After 13 minutes of spirited bidding between six determined clients, Peter Doig’s 'Ski Jacket' sold for £14,270,000 — the highest-selling lot of the 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale.

Part of The Ole Faarup Collection, a group of works by the late Danish collector Ole Faarup, proceeds from the sale will go to the newly established Ole Faarup Foundation, supporting the next generation of artists.

Faarup often formed friendships with the artists he collected — including Doig — and believed that great art has ‘soul'.

That spirit lives in 'Ski Jacket': a snow-covered slope flushed in auroral hues of pink, gold and blue, where tiny skiers glide between conifers and chalets. A sister painting from the same year, also titled 'Ski Jacket', is part of the Tate collection.

After fierce competition across the phones and in the room, the winning bid came from the saleroom itself.
